FWIW, the new 3.5-3.7 V6 Duratecs (Cyclone family) are totally unrelated to the traditional 2.5/3.0 Duratecs (Mondeo family). The 3.0L Duratec is one of the most reliable V6s of all time, it doesn't get credit because it never made a lot of power from the factory and people complained it wasn't as smooth as some of the newer V6s.

The Ranger 5 speed, while a truck tranny, does not have truck ratios. Here they are: 3.72, 2.20, 1.50, 1.00. 0.79. I have heard that it is possible to put the innards of a Ranger 4.0 tranny in the Duratec box. That will give you 3.40, 2.05, 1.31, 1.00, 0.79. I have installed a 2.3 and M5R1 in a Sunbeam Alpine and the Ranger ratios are fine.

A good motor and a good bargain. I have a '13 Edge and I love the 3.5. I have 18,000 on mine and it hauls. I think the reliability issue tilts in your favor. I also have a 6 yr. old Escape with the 3.0 motor and we've had no probs whatsoever, and we bought it new as well. I think you'll be pleased with the Edge.

My best friend owns a Fusion (not sure the year) and a 2009 Escape. Both have the 2.5L engines in them. 2014 Ford Escape S.

This is correct. The Cyclone Engines (3.5, 3.7) are not related to the D30 engine. It was a clean sheet design. Cyclone is only V6. It can however get both smaller and larger. (Speculation has been a range of 2.7-4.0). The engines in the Mazzers do not share all the features of their Ford counterparts either.
